Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

State the theorem of Varignon.

2 marks

Answer

Varignon's theorem states that the moment of the resultant of several concurrent forces about any point is equal to the algebraic sum of the moments of the individual forces about the same point.

b

Write the equations of equilibrium of a coplanar system of forces.

3 marks

Answer

For a coplanar system of forces in equilibrium, the following three conditions must be satisfied:

ΣFx = 0
ΣFy = 0
ΣMO = 0

where ΣFx and ΣFy are the algebraic sums of the components of forces along the x and y axes, and ΣMO is the algebraic sum of the moments of all forces about any point O in the plane.
