a

What do you mean by complementary shear stress?

2 marks

Answer

Complementary shear stress is the shear stress induced on the faces of an element perpendicular to the plane of the applied shear stress. It is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the applied shear stress, ensuring the equilibrium of the element against rotation.

b

State the Saint Venant’s Principle.

3 marks

Answer

Saint Venant’s Principle states that the difference between the effects of two different but statically equivalent load systems applied to a small part of a body becomes negligible at distances sufficiently large compared to the dimensions of the area where the loads are applied.
