What is the significance of vitrinite reflectance in “source rock” evaluation?

8 marks

Answer

Vitrinite reflectance (Ro) is the most widely used thermal maturity indicator in petroleum geology. It measures the percentage of incident light reflected from the surface of vitrinite macerals, which are derived from woody plant tissues. As source rocks are buried and subjected to increasing temperatures, the chemical structure of vitrinite becomes more ordered and aromatic, causing its reflectivity to increase predictably.

Its significance in source rock evaluation includes:

  • Maturity Assessment: It provides a direct measurement of the thermal history of a sedimentary basin, allowing geologists to determine if a source rock has reached the oil window (typically 0.6% to 1.3% Ro), the gas window (1.3% to 2.0% Ro), or is overmature.
  • Hydrocarbon Generation Potential: By correlating Ro values with geochemical data, it helps predict whether a source rock is currently generating hydrocarbons, has already generated them, or is yet to reach maturity.
  • Calibration of Thermal Models: Vitrinite reflectance data serves as a primary calibration point for basin modeling software, ensuring that reconstructed burial and temperature histories are geologically accurate.
  • Consistency: Unlike other biological markers that may degrade, vitrinite is relatively stable and ubiquitous in most sedimentary sequences containing terrestrial organic matter, making it a reliable standard for regional correlation.
b

Explain the process of metagenesis in the formation of source rocks.

7 marks

Answer

Metagenesis represents the final stage of organic matter maturation, occurring at depths and temperatures beyond the oil and wet gas generation windows. It is the transition zone between the peak catagenesis phase and the onset of low-grade metamorphism.

The process involves the following key characteristics:

  • Temperature Range: Metagenesis typically occurs at temperatures exceeding 150°C to 200°C, corresponding to vitrinite reflectance values generally greater than 2.0%.
  • Chemical Transformation: During this stage, the remaining kerogen is stripped of its last hydrogen atoms, becoming highly carbonized and graphitic. The process is dominated by the thermal cracking of any remaining hydrocarbons into dry gas (predominantly methane) and eventually the destruction of hydrocarbons themselves.
  • Productivity: The primary product is dry methane gas. However, as temperatures continue to rise, the capacity of the rock to retain gas decreases, and the gas may be lost or converted into non-commercial products.
  • Geological Outcome: The organic matter is eventually reduced to inert carbon residue, such as semi-anthracite or anthracite coal. At this stage, the source rock is considered 'overmature' or 'post-mature,' meaning it no longer has the capacity to generate new liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons.
