Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define forced convection heat transfer. List the factors affecting heat transfer rate in forced convection.

2 marks

Answer

Forced convection is a mechanism of heat transfer where fluid motion is generated by an external source such as a pump, fan, or blower. The heat transfer rate is affected by fluid velocity, fluid properties (density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, specific heat), surface geometry, and the nature of the flow (laminar or turbulent).

b

Mention the analogy between “thermal resistances in series” and “electrical resistance in series”.

3 marks

Answer

In thermal systems, the heat flow rate (Q) is analogous to electrical current (I), the temperature difference (ΔT) is analogous to voltage difference (V), and the thermal resistance (R_th) is analogous to electrical resistance (R_e). For resistances in series, the total thermal resistance is the sum of individual resistances, similar to Kirchhoff's voltage law for electrical circuits.

c

Define “heat transfer coefficient”.
