Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

1.a

What is a random variable? Give an example.

2 marks

Answer

A random variable is a real-valued function that assigns a numerical value to each outcome in the sample space of a random experiment. It maps the set of possible outcomes to the set of real numbers, allowing for the application of mathematical and statistical methods to probabilistic events.

For example, in the experiment of tossing a fair coin twice, if we define the random variable X as the number of heads obtained, the possible values for X are 0, 1, and 2, corresponding to the outcomes {TT}, {HT, TH}, and {HH} respectively.

1.b

Find the moment generating function of Binomial distribution.

3 marks

Answer

For a binomial random variable X with parameters n and p, the probability mass function is given by P(X = k) = nCk pk qn-k, where q = 1 - p. The moment generating function MX(t) is defined as the expected value of etX.

MX(t) = E[etX] = Σk=0n etk nCk pk qn-k

By grouping the terms with the same exponent k, we obtain:

MX(t) = Σk=0n nCk (pet)k qn-k

Applying the Binomial Theorem, which states that (a + b)n = Σk=0n nCk ak bn-k, we identify a = pet and b = q:

MX(t) = (q + pet)n
1.c
