JNTU B.Tech III PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS Previous Question Paper (November/December - 2017 - R15)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.
PART - A
Define mathematical expectation. What is the mathematical expectation when a fair die is rolled.
Answer
The mathematical expectation of a discrete random variable X is defined as E[X] = Σ xP(x), where the sum is taken over all possible values of X. For a fair die, the possible outcomes are {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} each with probability 1/6. Thus, E[X] = (1+2+3+4+5+6)/6 = 21/6 = 3.5.
Given the probability function for X (0, 1, 2, 3) with p(X) (0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.1). Let Y = X2 + 2X, then find (i) the probability function of Y. (ii) The mean of Y.
Answer
(i) For Y = X2 + 2X, the values are: Y(0) = 0, Y(1) = 3, Y(2) = 8, Y(3) = 15. The probability distribution is P(Y=0)=0.1, P(Y=3)=0.3, P(Y=8)=0.5, P(Y=15)=0.1. (ii) The mean E[Y] = (0*0.1) + (3*0.3) + (8*0.5) + (15*0.1) = 0 + 0.9 + 4.0 + 1.5 = 6.4.
