JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B. Tech III Year THERMODYNAMICS FOR PETROLEUM ENGINEERS Previous Question Paper (November/December - 2018 - R15)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Part A
Explain the Joules experiment for the study of first law of thermodynamics.
Answer
Joule's experiment involved a paddle wheel submerged in an insulated container of water. By measuring the work done by the falling weights to turn the paddle wheel and the corresponding rise in water temperature, Joule demonstrated that a fixed amount of work is equivalent to a specific amount of heat, establishing the mechanical equivalent of heat and the conservation of energy principle.
What is the difference between heat capacity and enthalpy of the substance? Discuss in detail.
Answer
Heat capacity is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a unit mass of a substance by one degree, defined as C = dQ/dT. Enthalpy (H = U + PV) is a thermodynamic property representing the total heat content of a system. While heat capacity measures the sensitivity of a substance to energy input, enthalpy represents the total energy stored in the substance due to its internal energy and flow work.

A system with initial internal energy of 300 kJ is receiving heat of 280 kJ at constant volume process and rejects heat of 260 kJ at constant pressure when 60 kJ of work is done on the system. The system is brought to its original state by an adiabatic process. Calculate the adiabatic work and value of internal energy at salient points.

The flue gases 10 kg/s flows into turbine to develop a designed power of 50MW. The enthalpies of gases at inlet and outlet based on the conditions are 910 kJ/kg and 180 kJ/kg respectively and the velocity of gases at inlet is 25 m/s and at exit 110 m/s. Calculate the rate at which heat is rejected to the turbine and the area of the inlet pipe given that the specific volume of the gases at the inlet is 0.45 m3/kg.
