What do you mean by GTO? Classify different types of Drilling.

15 marks

Answer

GTO stands for Geological Time Objective (or sometimes referred to in specific drilling contexts as Geological Target Objective). It represents the primary geological depth or formation horizon that a drilling operation aims to reach to evaluate or extract hydrocarbon resources. It is defined by the depth, stratigraphic position, and structural location of the reservoir rock, serving as the fundamental benchmark for planning the well trajectory, casing program, and mud weight requirements.

Drilling operations are classified based on the mechanism of rock penetration and the application environment. The primary classifications are as follows:

  • Cable Tool Drilling: An older, percussion-based method where a heavy bit is repeatedly lifted and dropped to crush the rock at the bottom of the hole. The cuttings are removed by a bailer. It is limited to shallow depths and specific formations.
  • Rotary Drilling: The most common modern technique where a rotating drill string, equipped with a bit at the bottom, applies weight and torque to cut the rock. Drilling fluid (mud) is circulated to cool the bit and transport cuttings to the surface.
  • Rotary Table Drilling: A traditional rotary method where the drill string is rotated by a rotary table on the rig floor.
  • Top Drive Drilling: A modern evolution of rotary drilling where a motor suspended from the derrick rotates the drill string, allowing for faster connections and improved well control.
  • Directional Drilling: The practice of drilling non-vertical wells to reach targets that are not directly beneath the rig location, or to increase the reservoir exposure length (e.g., horizontal drilling).
  • Offshore Drilling: Drilling conducted in marine environments, classified further into:
    • Jack-up rigs: Used in shallow waters where the rig legs rest on the seabed.
    • Semi-submersible rigs: Floating structures used for deep-water drilling, anchored or held in position by dynamic positioning.
    • Drillships: Self-propelled vessels capable of drilling in ultra-deep waters.
  • Coiled Tubing Drilling: Utilizes a continuous string of steel pipe stored on a reel, which is pushed into the wellbore using an injector head, often used for re-entry or underbalanced drilling.

Which type of waste are comes under drill fluids waste? Give few examples and discuss the disposing methods.

15 marks

Answer

Drilling fluid waste, commonly referred to as drilling mud waste, constitutes the primary volume of waste generated during oil and gas exploration. It is a complex mixture of base fluids (water, oil, or synthetic), weighting agents (like barite), viscosifiers (bentonite), and various chemical additives used to facilitate drilling operations.

Drilling fluid wastes are generally categorized based on their base fluid composition:

  • Water-Based Mud (WBM) waste: Comprises water, clays, and chemical additives. While less toxic, it contains high concentrations of suspended solids and salts.
  • Oil-Based Mud (OBM) waste: Contains diesel or mineral oil as the continuous phase. These are highly regulated due to their toxicity and potential for environmental contamination.
  • Synthetic-Based Mud (SBM) waste: Uses synthetic organic compounds as the base fluid, offering better environmental performance than OBM but requiring careful management.

Examples of specific waste streams include:

  • Drill Cuttings: Rock fragments brought to the surface by the circulating mud.
  • Spent Mud: Drilling fluid that has reached the end of its useful life or no longer meets technical specifications.
  • Wash Water: Water used to clean the rig floor, tanks, and equipment, contaminated with mud residues.

Disposal methods are selected based on environmental regulations, geographical location, and the type of mud used:

  1. On-site Burial (Reserve Pit): The waste is stored in a lined pit. Once drilling is complete, the liquids are evaporated or treated, and the solids are buried in situ. This is increasingly restricted due to groundwater concerns.
  2. Land Farming: Biodegradable waste (typically WBM) is spread over a designated area of land. Microorganisms in the soil break down the organic components. It requires strict monitoring to prevent heavy metal accumulation.
  3. Injection (Cuttings Re-Injection - CRI): The waste is ground into a slurry and injected into a deep, isolated geological formation (often a depleted reservoir or a salt cavern) via a dedicated disposal well. This is highly effective for OBM and SBM.
  4. Thermal Desorption: A mechanical process that heats the cuttings to vaporize the oil and water phases, allowing the recovery of the base oil and leaving behind clean, dry solids that can be safely disposed of or reused.
  5. Off-site Treatment and Disposal: Waste is transported to specialized commercial facilities where it undergoes chemical stabilization, solidification, or incineration before being sent to an engineered landfill.
