a

What do you understand by appraisal well?

2 marks

Answer

An appraisal well is drilled after a discovery well to evaluate the size, extent, and commercial viability of a hydrocarbon reservoir. It provides critical data on reservoir properties, fluid characteristics, and connectivity to determine if field development is economically feasible.

b

Explain briefly about relief well drilling.

3 marks

Answer

Relief well drilling is an emergency procedure used to intersect a blowout well at depth. By drilling a secondary wellbore to reach the target formation, heavy kill fluids can be pumped directly into the blowout well to regain pressure control and stop the uncontrolled flow of hydrocarbons.
