What are the characteristics and properties of the petroleum products?

7 marks

Answer

Petroleum products are complex mixtures of hydrocarbons derived from crude oil through refining processes. Their characteristics and properties are determined by their molecular composition and boiling point ranges.

Key characteristics and properties include:

  • Volatility: The tendency of a product to vaporize. High volatility is essential for fuels like gasoline to ensure easy engine starting, whereas low volatility is required for lubricants and heavy fuel oils.
  • Viscosity: A measure of a fluid's resistance to flow. This is a critical property for lubricants to ensure effective film formation between moving parts and for fuel oils to determine pumpability and atomization.
  • Flash Point: The lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapor to form an ignitable mixture in air. This is a vital safety parameter for storage and transportation.
  • Octane and Cetane Numbers: Octane number measures the anti-knock quality of gasoline, while cetane number indicates the ignition quality and combustion delay of diesel fuel.
  • Sulfur Content: An impurity that affects environmental emissions and engine corrosion; refining processes like hydrodesulfurization are used to minimize it.
  • Density and Specific Gravity: These properties influence the energy content per unit volume and are used for classification and pricing.

Discuss in detail the structure of the Oil industry.

8 marks

Answer

The oil industry is structured into three distinct, integrated segments, often referred to as the value chain. These segments represent the lifecycle of petroleum from extraction to the final consumer.

  • Upstream Sector (Exploration and Production - E&P): This segment involves the search for underground or underwater oil and gas fields, drilling exploratory wells, and operating the wells that bring the crude oil and raw natural gas to the surface. It is characterized by high capital intensity and significant geological risk.
  • Midstream Sector: This sector acts as the bridge between upstream and downstream. It encompasses the transportation, storage, and wholesale marketing of crude oil and natural gas. Key infrastructure includes pipelines, tanker ships, rail cars, and large storage terminals. Processing facilities that remove impurities or separate natural gas liquids are also considered part of the midstream.
  • Downstream Sector: This segment focuses on the refining of crude oil into usable products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, heating oil, and petrochemical feedstocks. It also includes the distribution and retail marketing of these products to end-users through gas stations, industrial supply chains, and chemical manufacturing plants.

The industry is further categorized into Integrated Oil Companies (IOCs), which operate across all three segments, and National Oil Companies (NOCs), which are state-owned entities often controlling a country's domestic resources. This vertical integration allows companies to manage price volatility and ensure supply chain security.
