Discuss about computer environments.

6 marks

Answer

A computer environment refers to the combination of hardware, software, and network configurations that allow a computer to function and execute programs. It encompasses the Operating System (OS), which acts as the interface between the user and the hardware, managing resources like CPU, memory, and storage. Key components include the Development Environment, which provides tools such as compilers, debuggers, and IDEs for writing and testing code; the Runtime Environment, which provides the necessary libraries and services for an application to execute; and the Network Environment, which enables connectivity and data exchange between systems. These layers collectively ensure that software can interact with hardware efficiently and securely.

b

What is type conversion? Explain with an example.

6 marks

Answer

Type conversion is the process of changing a value from one data type to another. It is categorized into two types: Implicit conversion (automatic), where the compiler converts a smaller data type to a larger one to prevent data loss, and Explicit conversion (type casting), where the programmer forces a conversion using a cast operator.

Example:

int a = 10;
float b = (float)a / 3;

In this example, the integer variable a is explicitly cast to a float before the division operation. Without the cast, the division would perform integer arithmetic, resulting in 3.0 instead of 3.3333.
