Answer PaperPaper Code: 811AAMaximum Marks: 60Time: 3hrs

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 20 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 8 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART - A

120 marks
a

Define suitable predicates and symbolize each of the following:

i) Some of my friends are clever

ii) All clever people are boring

iii) None of my friends is wealthy

iv) Some of my wealthy friends are clever

v) All my clever friends are boring.

4 marks

Answer

Let F(x) be 'x is my friend', C(x) be 'x is clever', B(x) be 'x is boring', and W(x) be 'x is wealthy'.

  1. (∃x)(F(x) ∧ C(x))
  2. (∀x)(C(x) → B(x))
  3. (∀x)(F(x) → ¬W(x)) or ¬(∃x)(F(x) ∧ W(x))
  4. (∃x)(W(x) ∧ F(x) ∧ C(x))
  5. (∀x)((F(x) ∧ C(x)) → B(x))
b

Determine whether the relation with the directed graph shown is an equivalence relation.

4 marks

Answer

A relation is an equivalence relation if it is reflexive, symmetric, and transitive. For a directed graph, this means:

  • Reflexivity: Every vertex must have a self-loop.
  • Symmetry: For every edge from u to v, there must be an edge from v to u.
  • Transitivity: If there is an edge from u to v and v to w, there must be an edge from u to w.

If the graph lacks any self-loops, lacks reverse edges for non-symmetric paths, or fails the composition requirement, it is not an equivalence relation.

c
