The probabilities of passing in subjects A, B, C and D are 3/4, 2/3, 4/5 and 1/2 respectively. To qualify in the examination a student should pass in A and two among the other three. What is the probability of qualifying in the examination?

7 marks

Answer

Let P(A) = 3/4, P(B) = 2/3, P(C) = 4/5, and P(D) = 1/2. The student must pass A, and exactly two of {B, C, D}. The probability of failing B, C, and D are P(B') = 1/3, P(C') = 1/5, and P(D') = 1/2 respectively.

The favorable scenarios for passing two of the remaining three are:

  1. Pass B and C, fail D: P(B)P(C)P(D') = (2/3) * (4/5) * (1/2) = 8/30
  2. Pass B and D, fail C: P(B)P(D)P(C') = (2/3) * (1/2) * (1/5) = 2/30
  3. Pass C and D, fail B: P(C)P(D)P(B') = (4/5) * (1/2) * (1/3) = 4/30

Sum of probabilities for passing exactly two of {B, C, D} is (8 + 2 + 4) / 30 = 14/30 = 7/15. Since the student must pass A, the total probability is P(A) * (7/15) = (3/4) * (7/15) = 21/60 = 7/20.

A purse contains 2 silver and 4 copper coins and a second purse contains 4 silver and 4 copper coins. A coin is selected from one of the purses and found that it is silver. Find the probability that it is:

i) From purse I

ii) From purse-II

8 marks

Answer

Let H1 be the event of choosing Purse I and H2 be the event of choosing Purse II. P(H1) = P(H2) = 1/2. Let S be the event of drawing a silver coin.

Probabilities of drawing a silver coin from each purse:

P(S|H1) = 2/6 = 1/3
P(S|H2) = 4/8 = 1/2

Total probability of drawing a silver coin P(S) = P(H1)P(S|H1) + P(H2)P(S|H2) = (1/2 * 1/3) + (1/2 * 1/2) = 1/6 + 1/4 = 5/12.

Using Bayes' Theorem:

  1. i) P(H1|S) = [P(H1) * P(S|H1)] / P(S) = (1/6) / (5/12) = 2/5
  2. ii) P(H2|S) = [P(H2) * P(S|H2)] / P(S) = (1/4) / (5/12) = 3/5
