Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
How does database management system provide data abstraction? Discuss briefly.
Answer
Data abstraction in a Database Management System (DBMS) is the process of hiding complex implementation details from end-users while providing a simplified view of the data. This is achieved through a three-level architecture:
- Physical Level (Internal Level): The lowest level of abstraction, describing how data is actually stored in the storage devices, including file structures, indexing, and data compression techniques.
- Logical Level (Conceptual Level): Describes what data is stored in the database and the relationships among the data. It hides the physical storage details and is typically managed by database administrators.
- View Level (External Level): The highest level, where only a part of the database is visible to specific users. This level provides security and simplifies interaction by presenting data in a format relevant to the user's needs.
This layering ensures data independence, allowing the physical storage or logical schema to change without requiring modifications to the user applications.
Describe the overall system structure of database management system.
Answer
The system structure of a DBMS is divided into several components that manage the interaction between the user and the stored data:
- Query Processor: Parses, compiles, and optimizes user queries to determine the most efficient execution plan.
- Storage Manager: Acts as the interface between low-level data stored in the database and the application programs. It includes the Authorization and Integrity Manager (checking constraints), Transaction Manager (ensuring ACID properties), File Manager (managing space allocation), and Buffer Manager (caching data in memory).
- Disk Storage: The physical storage layer, including data files, indices, and data dictionaries (metadata) that store the structure of the database.
Together, these components ensure that data requests are processed efficiently, securely, and reliably while maintaining data consistency.
With examples explain the concept of descriptive attribute, determinant, derived attribute.

Consider the following schema to write queries in SQL.
Suppliers(sid,sname,address)
Parts(pid,pname,color)
Catalog(sid,pid,cost)
i) Find the snames of suppliers who supply some red part and some green part.
ii) Find the sids of suppliers who supply every red part or supply every green part.
iii) Find the pids of parts supplied at least two different suppliers.
