a

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Batch processing systems?

4 marks

Answer

Advantages: Batch systems allow for efficient utilization of CPU time by eliminating idle time between jobs, as jobs are processed in a continuous stream without human intervention. They are well-suited for high-volume, repetitive tasks where fast turnaround is not critical.

Disadvantages: The primary disadvantage is the lack of interaction between the user and the job during execution, making debugging difficult. Additionally, there is a significant turnaround time, and if one job fails or enters an infinite loop, it can delay all subsequent jobs in the batch.

b

Write down the differences between a semaphore and a monitor.

4 marks

Answer

A semaphore is an integer variable accessed through atomic operations (wait and signal) used for process synchronization, where the programmer is responsible for ensuring correct usage to avoid deadlocks. A monitor is a high-level synchronization construct provided by the programming language that encapsulates shared data and operations, ensuring mutual exclusion automatically by allowing only one process to be active within the monitor at a time.
