Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
What are the characteristics and various categories of software?
Answer
Software is a logical product rather than a physical one, characterized by its development rather than manufacturing, its tendency not to wear out, and its custom-built nature. Key characteristics include:
- Complexity: Software often involves highly complex logic and interactions.
- Maintainability: It must be updated to accommodate changing requirements or environments.
- Scalability: The ability to handle increased load or functionality.
- Reliability: The degree to which software performs its required functions under stated conditions.
Software is categorized into several types:
- System Software: Programs that manage the hardware and provide a platform for other software (e.g., Operating Systems, drivers).
- Application Software: Programs designed for end-users to perform specific tasks (e.g., word processors, spreadsheets).
- Engineering/Scientific Software: Software characterized by 'number-crunching' algorithms (e.g., CAD, simulation systems).
- Embedded Software: Software residing within a product or system to control its features (e.g., keypad control for a microwave).
- Web Applications: Network-centric software accessed via browsers.
- Artificial Intelligence Software: Systems that use non-numerical algorithms to solve complex problems.
Explain the iterative waterfall model and list the merits and demerits of it.
Answer
The Iterative Waterfall Model is a variation of the traditional waterfall model that incorporates feedback loops. It allows the project team to revisit previous phases (such as requirements or design) if issues are discovered during later stages like coding or testing. This approach acknowledges that software development is rarely a perfectly linear process.
Merits:
- Provides flexibility to incorporate changes during the development cycle.
- Clear structure and documentation are maintained, similar to the classic waterfall.
- Issues identified in later stages can be addressed by cycling back to earlier phases.
Demerits:
- Still requires significant documentation and planning, which can be time-consuming.
- If the number of iterations is high, it can become costly and lead to scope creep.
- Not as agile as modern iterative models like Scrum or XP, as it still relies on a sequential foundation.
