Main
Differentiate between Connection-Oriented Vs Connectionless Service.
Answer
Connection-oriented and connectionless services represent two fundamental approaches to data transmission in computer networks.
| Feature | Connection-Oriented | Connectionless |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Requires a connection setup phase before data transfer. | No connection setup; data is sent immediately. |
| Reliability | Highly reliable; uses acknowledgments and retransmissions. | Best-effort delivery; no guarantee of arrival. |
| Ordering | Packets arrive in the same order they were sent. | Packets may arrive out of order. |
| Overhead | Higher overhead due to connection management. | Lower overhead; no state maintenance required. |
| Example | TCP (Transmission Control Protocol). | UDP (User Datagram Protocol). |
Explain briefly about the Twisted-pair Cables.
Answer
Twisted-pair cables consist of pairs of insulated copper wires twisted together to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) and crosstalk between adjacent pairs. The twisting helps cancel out external signals, as the noise induced in one wire is largely neutralized by the opposite phase in the other.
There are two primary types:
- Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP): The most common cable type for local area networks (LANs). It relies solely on the physical twisting of wires for noise cancellation and is inexpensive and easy to install. Categories range from Cat5e to Cat8, offering varying bandwidths.
- Shielded Twisted-Pair (STP): Includes a metal foil or braided mesh shield around the twisted pairs to provide superior protection against electromagnetic interference. It is more expensive and rigid than UTP, making it suitable for environments with high electrical noise.
Twisted-pair cables typically use RJ-45 connectors for termination and are limited by a maximum segment length of 100 meters to maintain signal integrity.
