For what reasons database management system is preferred over file system?

4 marks

Answer

A database management system (DBMS) is preferred over a traditional file system for several key reasons:

  • Data Redundancy and Inconsistency: DBMS minimizes duplicate data, ensuring consistency across the system.
  • Data Isolation: Data is stored in a structured format, making it easier to retrieve and manipulate compared to scattered files.
  • Concurrent Access: DBMS allows multiple users to access data simultaneously while maintaining integrity through locking mechanisms.
  • Security and Integrity: DBMS provides centralized control, enabling fine-grained access rights and enforcement of integrity constraints that are difficult to manage in file systems.
b

What is the use of outer join? Give its types.

4 marks

Answer

An outer join is used to retrieve rows from tables even when there is no matching record in the joined table. Unlike inner joins, which only return matching rows, outer joins preserve unmatched data by filling missing columns with NULL values. Its types are:

  • Left Outer Join: Returns all records from the left table and the matched records from the right table.
  • Right Outer Join: Returns all records from the right table and the matched records from the left table.
  • Full Outer Join: Returns all records when there is a match in either the left or right table.
