a

Explain in detail various types of attacks on encrypted messages.

5 marks

Answer

Attacks on encrypted messages generally fall into four categories based on the information available to the attacker:

  • Ciphertext-only attack: The attacker has access only to the ciphertext and attempts to recover the plaintext or the key through statistical analysis or brute force.
  • Known-plaintext attack: The attacker has access to both the ciphertext and the corresponding plaintext for one or more messages, which can be used to deduce the key.
  • Chosen-plaintext attack: The attacker can choose arbitrary plaintexts and obtain their corresponding ciphertexts, allowing for more sophisticated cryptanalysis.
  • Chosen-ciphertext attack: The attacker can select ciphertexts and obtain the corresponding plaintexts, often used to exploit weaknesses in decryption algorithms.
b

Explain briefly about RSA algorithm in detail manner.

5 marks

Answer

The RSA algorithm is a public-key cryptosystem based on the difficulty of factoring large prime numbers. The process involves three main steps:

  1. Key Generation: Select two large primes p and q, compute n = p × q, and calculate Euler's totient function φ(n) = (p-1)(q-1). Choose a public exponent e such that 1 < e < φ(n) and gcd(e, φ(n)) = 1. Calculate the private key d as the modular multiplicative inverse of e modulo φ(n).
  2. Encryption: The ciphertext C is calculated as C = Me mod n, where M is the plaintext message.
  3. Decryption: The original message M is recovered using the private key d via M = Cd mod n.
