JNTU MCA 2018 INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEMS Previous Question Paper (January - 2018 - R15)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Part A
5 × 5 Marks = 25
Define Information Retrieval. Explain how Information Retrieval is different from DBMS.
Answer
Information Retrieval (IR) is the process of searching for, identifying, and retrieving relevant information from a collection of unstructured or semi-structured data based on a user's information need. Unlike DBMS, which deals with highly structured data, precise queries, and transactional integrity, IR focuses on relevance, ranking, and handling ambiguity in natural language. While DBMS uses formal query languages like SQL to return exact matches, IR uses probabilistic or vector-space models to return a ranked list of documents that are likely to satisfy a user's intent.
Explain briefly the system issues in Information Retrieval.
Answer
System issues in IR primarily concern performance, scalability, and efficiency. Key issues include:
- Indexing Efficiency: Building and updating large-scale inverted indexes for billions of documents.
- Query Latency: Minimizing the time taken to process queries and retrieve results in real-time.
- Scalability: Designing distributed architectures to handle massive data volumes and high query throughput.
- Storage Management: Efficiently compressing indexes to fit into memory or optimize disk I/O.
