Explain about the J2ME configurations.
Answer
J2ME configurations define the minimum platform requirements for a specific range of devices based on their memory, processing power, and display capabilities. They provide the core Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and a minimal set of class libraries. The two primary configurations are:
- Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC): Designed for devices with extremely limited resources, such as early mobile phones and pagers. It typically features 16-bit or 32-bit processors, limited memory (often less than 512 KB), and intermittent network connectivity. It uses the KVM (Kilobyte Virtual Machine).
- Connected Device Configuration (CDC): Intended for more powerful, connected devices like high-end smartphones, set-top boxes, and automotive systems. These devices have more memory (typically 2 MB or more), full-featured JVMs, and more robust network support, allowing for a larger subset of the standard Java API.
Configurations serve as the foundation upon which Profiles are built to provide specific application functionality.
Explain the attributes of a Manifest File.
Answer
The AndroidManifest.xml file is essential for every Android application, as it provides the Android system with critical information required to run the app before any code is executed. Its primary attributes and components include:
- package: A unique identifier for the application, typically following the reverse domain name convention, which serves as the application's ID in the Google Play Store.
- android:versionCode: An internal integer value used to track versions for updates; it is not displayed to users but is used by the system to determine if an update is available.
- android:versionName: A string value representing the user-visible version number of the application release.
- android:minSdkVersion: Specifies the minimum API level required for the application to function, preventing installation on devices with older, incompatible OS versions.
- android:targetSdkVersion: Indicates the API level the application was designed for, which helps the system apply compatibility behaviors for newer Android versions.
- android:icon and android:label: Define the application's launcher icon and the display name visible to the user in the device's app drawer.
