Part A

Answer all questions. Each question carries 5 marks.

125 marks
a

Describe the goals for software testing.

5 marks

Answer

The primary goals of software testing are to identify defects, ensure the software meets specified requirements, and provide confidence in the system's reliability. Specifically, testing aims to: 1) Find bugs early in the development lifecycle to reduce costs; 2) Validate that the software functions as intended by the user; 3) Verify that the implementation conforms to the design specifications; 4) Assess the quality and performance of the system; and 5) Reduce the risk of failure in the production environment.

b

What is the purpose of data flow testing?

5 marks

Answer

The purpose of data flow testing is to detect errors related to the lifecycle of variables within a program. It focuses on the points where variables are defined (assigned a value) and used (referenced). By tracking the paths between definitions and uses, it identifies anomalies such as: 1) Defined-but-not-used variables, which represent dead code; 2) Used-but-not-defined variables, which indicate uninitialized data; and 3) Multiple definitions without an intervening use, which can lead to redundant operations or logic errors.
