What are different types of errors in analysis? State the difference between accuracy and precision.

7 marks

Answer

Errors in analytical chemistry are broadly classified into three types:

  1. Determinate (Systematic) Errors: These have a definite cause and can be identified and eliminated. Examples include instrumental errors (e.g., faulty balance), method errors (e.g., incomplete reaction), and personal errors (e.g., bias in reading a meniscus).
  2. Indeterminate (Random) Errors: These arise from uncontrollable variables and are accidental in nature. They follow the laws of chance and can be minimized by taking multiple measurements and applying statistical methods.
  3. Gross Errors: These result from human mistakes such as sample loss, misreading a scale, or incorrect calculations. They are usually large and require the experiment to be repeated.

Accuracy refers to the closeness of a measured value to the true or accepted value, whereas precision refers to the reproducibility or closeness of agreement between a set of replicate measurements. Accuracy is measured by absolute or relative error, while precision is measured by standard deviation or coefficient of variation.

b

What is meant by volumetric analysis? Write its importance in pharmacy.

7 marks

Answer

Volumetric analysis, also known as titrimetric analysis, is a quantitative analytical technique where the concentration of an analyte is determined by reacting it with a reagent of known concentration (titrant) until the chemical reaction is complete, indicated by an end-point.

Its importance in pharmacy includes:

  • Quality Control: It is essential for determining the purity and assay of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and finished dosage forms.
  • Standardization: It is used to standardize secondary standard solutions against primary standards.
  • Pharmacopoeial Compliance: Many monographs in the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) and other pharmacopoeias rely on acid-base, complexometric, redox, and precipitation titrations to ensure drugs meet safety and efficacy standards.
  • Cost-effectiveness: It is a rapid, precise, and relatively inexpensive method for routine analysis in pharmaceutical manufacturing and research.
