1

Define Pharmacognosy. Discuss the present trend of herbal drugs market with respect to national and international perspective.

14 marks

Answer

Pharmacognosy is the branch of science that deals with the systematic study of crude drugs obtained from natural sources such as plants, animals, and minerals. It encompasses the study of their physical, chemical, biochemical, and biological properties, as well as their therapeutic applications, collection, processing, and quality control.

The global and national herbal drug market has experienced a significant resurgence, driven by the growing preference for natural products over synthetic alternatives due to their perceived safety and fewer side effects.

International Perspective: The international market is characterized by a shift toward evidence-based phytomedicine. Developed nations, particularly in Europe and North America, have integrated herbal products into mainstream healthcare as dietary supplements and nutraceuticals. There is a strong emphasis on standardized extracts, rigorous clinical trials, and strict regulatory compliance, such as the WHO guidelines for Good Agricultural and Collection Practices (GACP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). The market is increasingly focused on high-value phytopharmaceuticals and standardized botanical drugs.

National Perspective (India): India holds a unique position due to its rich heritage of traditional systems like Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani. The national trend is marked by a transition from traditional household remedies to scientifically validated, standardized herbal formulations. Government initiatives, such as the establishment of the Ministry of AYUSH, have promoted the modernization of herbal drug manufacturing. There is a growing emphasis on the cultivation of medicinal plants, the development of export-oriented herbal industries, and the integration of traditional knowledge with modern analytical techniques like HPTLC and HPLC to ensure quality, safety, and efficacy, positioning India as a global hub for herbal drug production.

2

Explain the various factors affecting the cultivation of medicinal plants. Write in detail about cultivation and collection of opium.

14 marks

Answer

The cultivation of medicinal plants is influenced by several environmental and biological factors that determine the yield and quality of active phytochemical constituents.

Factors affecting cultivation:

  • Altitude: High altitudes often increase the concentration of volatile oils and alkaloids due to lower temperatures and higher UV radiation.
  • Temperature: Essential for enzymatic activity and photosynthesis; extreme temperatures can degrade thermolabile active ingredients.
  • Rainfall: Adequate moisture is critical for plant growth, but excessive water can lead to root rot or leaching of water-soluble metabolites.
  • Soil: Soil pH, texture, and mineral content (NPK levels) directly influence plant metabolism and the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites.
  • Day length (Photoperiodism): Affects flowering and the accumulation of specific compounds; long-day plants require specific light durations to trigger metabolite production.
  • Fertilizers and Manures: Organic and inorganic nutrients must be balanced to ensure vigorous growth without compromising the quality of medicinal extracts.

Cultivation and Collection of Opium (Papaver somniferum):

Opium is the air-dried milky exudate obtained from the unripe capsules of Papaver somniferum (Family: Papaveraceae).

Cultivation: The plant is an annual herb requiring a cool climate and fertile, well-drained loamy soil. Seeds are sown in rows during autumn (October-November). The field requires regular irrigation and weeding. Nitrogenous fertilizers are applied during the vegetative growth phase. The crop matures in approximately 3 to 4 months, indicated by the capsules turning from green to a yellowish-green color.

Collection: The collection process is highly specialized:

  1. Lancing: About 15 to 20 days after the petals fall, the unripe capsules are incised vertically or transversely using a sharp instrument called a 'nushter'. This must be done in the afternoon.
  2. Exudation: The milky latex exudes from the laticiferous vessels and dries on the surface of the capsule overnight due to exposure to air.
  3. Scraping: The next morning, the dried brownish-black latex is scraped off using a blunt knife or a flat scraper.
  4. Processing: The collected raw opium is pooled, kneaded into masses, and dried in the shade to achieve the desired consistency before being packed for commercial use.
