1

Give a detailed note on the scope of pharmacognosy.

14 marks

Answer

Pharmacognosy is the study of physical, chemical, biochemical, and biological properties of drugs, drug substances, or potential drugs of natural origin. Its scope is vast, encompassing the identification, production, and utilization of natural products in modern medicine.

The scope of pharmacognosy includes the following key areas:

  • Drug Discovery and Development: It serves as the foundation for identifying new therapeutic agents from plants, animals, and marine sources. Many modern drugs, such as morphine, quinine, and vincristine, were discovered through pharmacognostic research.
  • Standardization and Quality Control: It provides the methods for evaluating the purity and quality of crude drugs using macroscopic, microscopic, and chemical analysis. This ensures that herbal medicines meet safety and efficacy standards.
  • Phytochemistry: The study of the chemical composition of natural products, including the isolation, purification, and structural elucidation of active constituents like alkaloids, glycosides, and terpenoids.
  • Cultivation and Conservation: It involves the study of medicinal plant cultivation, including soil requirements, fertilization, and harvesting techniques to optimize the yield of secondary metabolites. It also addresses the conservation of endangered medicinal species.
  • Pharmacological Evaluation: Pharmacognosy links natural products to their biological effects, conducting bioassays to validate traditional medicinal claims and identify the mechanism of action for new drug candidates.
  • Industrial Applications: It supports the pharmaceutical industry in the large-scale extraction of active ingredients, the development of nutraceuticals, and the production of herbal formulations and dietary supplements.
  • Biotechnology: Modern pharmacognosy integrates plant tissue culture and genetic engineering to produce high-value secondary metabolites in controlled environments, overcoming limitations of seasonal supply and low natural yields.

In summary, the scope of pharmacognosy extends from the field to the laboratory, playing a critical role in drug discovery, the standardization of herbal medicine, and the sustainable utilization of natural resources for healthcare.

2

Classify the crude drugs with specific examples. Write a note on chemical and pharmacological classification of crude drugs.

14 marks

Answer

Crude drugs are classified to organize the vast number of natural products systematically. The primary methods of classification include:

1. Morphological Classification: Drugs are grouped based on the plant part used, such as leaves (Senna), roots (Rauwolfia), barks (Cinchona), or flowers (Clove). This is useful for identification but does not reflect chemical or pharmacological similarities.

2. Taxonomic Classification: Based on the botanical relationship (Family, Genus, Species), such as Solanaceae (Datura, Belladonna). This follows the Bentham and Hooker system.

3. Chemical Classification: Drugs are grouped based on the nature of their active constituents. This is the most popular method for phytochemical studies. Examples include:

  • Alkaloids: Cinchona, Opium.
  • Glycosides: Digitalis, Senna.
  • Volatile Oils: Peppermint, Clove.
  • Tannins: Catechu.
  • Carbohydrates: Acacia, Agar.

4. Pharmacological Classification: Drugs are classified according to their therapeutic action on the human body. This is highly relevant for clinical practice. Examples include:

  • Carminatives: Fennel, Ginger.
  • Purgatives: Senna, Castor oil.
  • Cardiotonics: Digitalis, Strophanthus.
  • CNS Stimulants: Coffee, Tea.
  • Antihypertensives: Rauwolfia.

Note on Chemical and Pharmacological Classification:

The Chemical Classification is essential for the extraction and isolation of phytoconstituents. It allows chemists to apply similar isolation techniques to drugs within the same chemical group (e.g., steam distillation for volatile oils). However, it ignores the therapeutic use, and a single drug containing multiple chemical classes may be difficult to categorize.

The Pharmacological Classification is the most practical for medical professionals as it groups drugs by their therapeutic effect. It helps in selecting alternatives for specific treatments. The limitation is that drugs with different chemical structures but similar pharmacological actions are grouped together, and drugs with multiple therapeutic uses (e.g., Cinchona as an antimalarial and bitter tonic) may be placed in multiple categories.
