Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
Differentiate between quality control and quality assurance.
Answer
Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) are distinct but complementary components of a pharmaceutical quality system. QA is a proactive, process-oriented approach focused on preventing defects by ensuring that the systems and procedures in place are capable of producing products that meet quality standards. It involves the entire organization and encompasses activities such as documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), training, and internal audits.
In contrast, QC is a reactive, product-oriented approach focused on identifying defects in the final product. It involves the operational techniques and activities used to fulfill quality requirements through testing and inspection. QC relies on analytical methods, laboratory testing, and validation to ensure that the finished product meets pre-defined specifications before release.
Key differences include: QA focuses on the process, whereas QC focuses on the product; QA is preventative, while QC is corrective; and QA is a management responsibility involving all employees, whereas QC is primarily the responsibility of the quality control department.
Write the salient features of total quality management.
Answer
Total Quality Management (TQM) is a comprehensive management philosophy aimed at continuous improvement of all organizational processes to achieve long-term customer satisfaction. Its salient features include:
- Customer Focus: The primary goal is to meet or exceed customer requirements, whether internal or external.
- Total Employee Involvement: All employees across all levels of the organization are empowered and responsible for quality, fostering a culture of ownership.
- Process-Centered Approach: TQM emphasizes the systematic analysis and improvement of processes rather than just focusing on the final outcome.
- Integrated System: It connects all business functions and departments into a unified, cross-functional framework.
- Strategic and Systematic Approach: Quality management is integrated into the organization's overall strategic plan and mission.
- Continual Improvement: It utilizes analytical tools and feedback loops to consistently identify areas for optimization and innovation.
- Fact-Based Decision Making: Decisions are driven by data, statistical analysis, and performance metrics rather than intuition.
- Communication: Open and effective communication channels are maintained to ensure alignment with quality goals across the entire organization.
