B.Tech IV Year I Semester (R16)
The primary objective of this course is to make the student familiar with
the significance of Polymers as alternates of metals and alloys, study of their synthesis, characteristics, fabrication, and applications.
At the end of this course, the student will be able to
Conceptual study on Polymers: Definition and Classification, types of polymerization, mechanism of polymerization. Structure and properties of polymers: crystallinity of polymers, glass transition temperature, molecular weight of polymers
Fabrication of Polymers: Functions of additives used during fabrication of polymers, compounding. Calendaring and casting. Laminated Polymers. Recycling of Polymers.
Characteristics and applications of thermoplastics: Polyethene (LDPE and HDPE), Polypropylene, Polyvinyl Chloride, Polystyrene, Expanded polystyrene, Polytetra fluorethylene. Characteristics and applications of thermoplastics: Phenol- Formaldehyde resin, Urea- formaldehyde resins, alkyl resins.
Characteristics and applications: Nylons, Polymethyl, Methocrylate (PMMA), Saturated polyesters – PETP and PC, Cellulose acetate and viscose rayon. Elastomers: Introduction of natural rubbers and synthetic rubbers like Buna-S, Buna-N, Thiokol, Polyurethane rubber and Silicon rubber
Properties of polymers: mechanical, thermal and electronic properties, characterization of polymers
