Mention the various stages of evolution of Indian pharmaceutical industries

8 marks

Answer

The evolution of the Indian pharmaceutical industry is categorized into several distinct phases:

  • Pre-Independence Era (Before 1947): The industry was in its infancy, dominated by imports from foreign companies. Early pioneers like Bengal Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals (founded by Acharya P.C. Ray) laid the foundation for indigenous drug manufacturing.
  • Post-Independence Era (1947-1970): The government focused on self-reliance. The establishment of public sector undertakings like Hindustan Antibiotics Ltd (HAL) and Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Ltd (IDPL) marked the beginning of large-scale production of essential medicines.
  • Patent Act of 1970: This was a turning point. The shift from product patents to process patents allowed Indian companies to reverse-engineer drugs, leading to a boom in the production of affordable generic medicines and establishing India as the 'pharmacy of the world'.
  • Liberalization Era (1990s-2005): Economic reforms and the globalization of trade led to increased competition and the adoption of international quality standards like GMP.
  • Post-2005 Era: With the reintroduction of product patents to comply with TRIPS/WTO, the industry shifted its focus toward R&D, innovation, biosimilars, and high-value specialty generics to remain competitive in the global market.

Give an outline of development of British Pharmacopoea.

7 marks

Answer

The British Pharmacopoeia (BP) has evolved over centuries to ensure the quality and safety of medicinal products:

  • Early Origins: The first Pharmacopoeia Londinensis was published in 1618 by the College of Physicians of London, serving as the initial standard for medical practice in England.
  • Consolidation: In 1858, the Medical Act authorized the General Medical Council to publish a single British Pharmacopoeia, replacing the separate pharmacopoeias of London, Edinburgh, and Dublin.
  • First Edition (1864): The first official BP was published in 1864, aiming to unify standards across the United Kingdom.
  • Modernization: Throughout the 20th century, the BP underwent regular revisions to incorporate advancements in analytical chemistry, such as chromatography and spectroscopy.
  • European Integration: Following the UK's accession to the European Economic Community, the BP began aligning its standards with the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.).
  • Current Status: Today, the BP is published annually in both print and electronic formats, providing comprehensive, legally enforceable standards for active pharmaceutical ingredients, excipients, and finished dosage forms used in the UK.
