JNTU B.Pharmacy II BIOCHEMISTRY Previous Question Paper (May/June-2019 - R17)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.
Part A
What is the significance of citric acid cycle?
Answer
The citric acid cycle is the final common pathway for the oxidation of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. Its primary significance lies in generating high-energy electron carriers (NADH and FADH2) for the electron transport chain to produce ATP and providing essential precursors for biosynthetic pathways.
Explain the role of branching enzyme in glycogenesis.
Answer
The branching enzyme (amylo-(1,4→1,6)-transglycosylase) introduces branches into the growing glycogen chain. It transfers a segment of about 6-7 glucose residues from the non-reducing end of a linear chain to a C-6 hydroxyl group of a glucose residue on the same or adjacent chain, creating an α-1,6-glycosidic linkage. This increases the solubility of glycogen and creates more terminal ends for rapid mobilization of glucose.
