JNTU B.Pharmacy II MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY-I Previous Question Paper (September/October - 2023 - R17)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
Mention the various physicochemical properties related to the biological action. Write about chelation with an example.
Answer
Physicochemical properties influencing biological action include solubility, partition coefficient, ionization (pKa), hydrogen bonding, stereochemistry, and chelation. Chelation is the formation of a stable ring structure between a ligand and a metal ion. For example, tetracycline antibiotics chelate with divalent metal ions like Ca²⁺, which can reduce their absorption and antibacterial efficacy.
What is drug metabolism? Explain. Mention the various types of drug metabolism and write about conjugation reactions.
Answer
Drug metabolism is the biochemical modification of pharmaceutical substances by living organisms, primarily through specialized enzymatic systems. It converts lipophilic drugs into more polar, water-soluble metabolites for easier excretion. It is classified into Phase I (functionalization: oxidation, reduction, hydrolysis) and Phase II (conjugation). Conjugation reactions involve the attachment of an endogenous polar molecule (such as glucuronic acid, sulfate, or glutathione) to the drug or its Phase I metabolite, rendering it inactive and highly water-soluble.
Mention the drugs acting on ANS.
