Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

What do you mean by casting?

2 marks

Answer

Casting is a manufacturing process in which a liquid material, typically molten metal, is poured into a mold cavity of a desired shape and allowed to solidify. Once solidified, the part is removed from the mold to complete the fabrication process.

b

Explain in brief the die-casting processes.

3 marks

Answer

Die-casting is a metal casting process characterized by forcing molten metal under high pressure into a mold cavity (die). It is primarily divided into two types: Hot-chamber die-casting, where the injection mechanism is immersed in the molten metal, suitable for low-melting-point alloys like zinc; and Cold-chamber die-casting, where molten metal is ladled into the injection cylinder manually or automatically, used for higher-melting-point alloys like aluminum.
