JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech II Year AIRCRAFT PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY Previous Question Paper (November/December - 2017 - R16)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
PART-A
What is soldering? Where is it employed? How is it carried out?
Answer
Soldering is a joining process where two or more metal items are bonded together by melting and flowing a filler metal (solder) into the joint, which has a lower melting point than the base metals. It is employed in electronics, plumbing, and sheet metal work. It is carried out by heating the base metals and applying flux to clean the surfaces, followed by the application of molten solder which fills the gap via capillary action.
Describe shell moulding.
Answer
Shell moulding is a casting process that uses a resin-bonded sand mixture to create a thin, hard shell around a metal pattern. The pattern is heated and covered with the sand-resin mix, which hardens into a shell. The shell is then removed from the pattern, joined with another half, and filled with molten metal to produce high-precision castings with good surface finish.
