Part A

1a

Define Divergence of a Vector.

2 marks

Answer

The divergence of a continuously differentiable vector field F = F1i + F2j + F3k is a scalar function defined as the dot product of the del operator and the vector field. It is expressed as:

div F = ∇ · F = ∂F1/∂x + ∂F2/∂y + ∂F3/∂z

It represents the net rate of flow of the vector field out of an infinitesimal volume surrounding a given point.

1b

Find a unit normal vector to the given surface x2+y2+2z2 = 26 at the point (2, 2, 3).

3 marks

Answer

Let the given surface be defined by the scalar function f(x, y, z) = x2 + y2 + 2z2 - 26. The normal vector to the surface at any point is given by the gradient of the function, ∇f.

∇f = (∂f/∂x)i + (∂f/∂y)j + (∂f/∂z)k = 2xi + 2yj + 4zk

Evaluating the gradient at the point (2, 2, 3):

∇f(2, 2, 3) = 2(2)i + 2(2)j + 4(3)k = 4i + 4j + 12k

The magnitude of this gradient vector is:

|∇f| = √(42 + 42 + 122) = √(16 + 16 + 144) = √176 = 4√11

The unit normal vector n is obtained by dividing the gradient vector by its magnitude:

n = ± (∇f / |∇f|) = ± (4i + 4j + 12k) / 4√11 = ± (1/√11)i ± (1/√11)j ± (3/√11)k
