Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
PART- A
Find
Answer
The curl of a scalar field is defined as the cross product of the del operator with the scalar function. Since the curl of a scalar function is not defined in standard vector calculus (curl is defined for vector fields), the expression ∇×(yz) is treated as the gradient of the scalar field or is considered zero if interpreting the scalar as a vector field with zero components. However, strictly speaking, ∇×(φ) is not defined; if the question implies the gradient, the result is z i + y k.
Evaluate by Green’s Theorem
Answer
By Green's Theorem, ∫C (M dx + N dy) = &iint;R (∂N/∂x - ∂M/∂y) dA. Here, M = x2-y and N = x+y2. Then ∂N/∂x = 1 and ∂M/∂y = -1. The integral becomes &iint;R (1 - (-1)) dA = 2 &iint;R dA. Since the region is a unit circle, the area is πr2 = π(1)2 = π. Thus, the integral equals 2π.
