Part A

a

Define the principle of superposition. What is its utility?

2 marks

Answer

The principle of superposition states that for a linear elastic structure, the total effect (displacement or stress) caused by several loads acting simultaneously is equal to the algebraic sum of the effects caused by each load acting independently. Its utility lies in simplifying complex structural analysis by breaking down multi-load problems into simpler, solvable components.

b

State Hooke's law. Sketch the stress-strain diagram for a ductile material like mild steel tested under tension upto destruction, marketing the salient points on it.

3 marks

Answer

Hooke's Law states that within the limit of proportionality, the stress applied to a material is directly proportional to the strain produced. Mathematically, σ = Eε, where E is Young's modulus. The stress-strain diagram for mild steel includes the following salient points: Limit of Proportionality, Elastic Limit, Upper Yield Point, Lower Yield Point, Ultimate Tensile Strength, and Breaking Point.
