Answer PaperPaper Code: 113ACMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.

Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions.

In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Draw the stress strain diagram for mild steel and indicate salient points.

2 marks

Answer

The stress-strain diagram for mild steel starts with a linear proportional limit, followed by the elastic limit, upper and lower yield points, strain hardening region, ultimate stress point, and finally the fracture point.

b

Distinguish between impact load and suddenly applied load.

3 marks

Answer

An impact load is applied with a finite velocity, resulting in dynamic effects and kinetic energy transfer, whereas a suddenly applied load is applied instantaneously without initial velocity, causing the stress to reach twice the value of a statically applied load.

c

Sketch any 2 types of supports used for a beam indicating the reactions in each case.

A specimen of steel 22 mm diameter with a gauge length of 200 mm is tested to destruction. It has an extension of 0.25 mm under a load of 85 kN and the load at elastic limit is 105 kN. The maximum load is 160 kN. The total extension at fracture is 59 mm and diameter at neck is 19 mm. Analyze the behavior of steel specimen and Calculate: i) Stress at elastic limit. ii) Young’s modulus. iii) Percentage elongation. iv) Percentage reduction in area. v) Ultimate tensile stress.
