Part A

125 marks
a

Draw the Mohr’s Circle to determine stains on inclined plane

2 marks

Answer

Mohr's circle for strain is a graphical representation of the strain transformation equations. The circle is plotted on a coordinate system with normal strain (ε) on the horizontal axis and half the shear strain (γ/2) on the vertical axis. The center of the circle is at ((εx + εy)/2, 0) and the radius is sqrt(((εx - εy)/2)^2 + (γxy/2)^2). Any point on the circumference represents the strain state on a plane inclined at an angle θ.

b

Discuss the equations for plane stress and plane strain for 2D elastic body.

3 marks

Answer

For plane stress, the stress components acting out of the plane are zero (σz = τxz = τyz = 0). The constitutive relations are εx = (1/E)(σx - νσy), εy = (1/E)(σy - νσx), and γxy = τxy/G. For plane strain, the strain components out of the plane are zero (εz = γxz = γyz = 0). The stress-strain relations are modified such that σz = ν(σx + σy), and the effective elastic moduli are adjusted to account for the constrained lateral deformation.

a

The direct tensile and compressive stress is 60N/mm2 and 40N/mm2 respectively are applied on planes at right angles to each other. If the maximum principal stress is limited to 75N/mm2 (tensile), determine the shear stress that may be allowed on the planes. Also determine the minimum principal stress and the maximum shear stresses.
