Part A
Define Airy’s stress function in theory of elasticity.
Answer
Airy's stress function, denoted by φ, is a scalar function used in two-dimensional elasticity to solve for stress components by satisfying the equilibrium equations and compatibility conditions. For a state of plane stress or plane strain, the stress components are defined in terms of this function as:
When substituted into the compatibility equation for an isotropic material, the function must satisfy the biharmonic equation:
Illustrate the Mohr circle for different stress conditions.
Answer
The Mohr circle is a graphical representation of the transformation of stress components at a point. It plots the normal stress (σ) on the x-axis and shear stress (τ) on the y-axis. The circle is constructed using the coordinates (σx, τxy) and (σy, -τxy), with the center located at ((σx + σy)/2, 0) and a radius R = √(((σx - σy)/2)² + τxy²).
Different stress conditions result in distinct circle configurations:
- Uniaxial Tension: The circle is centered at (σ/2, 0) with radius σ/2, passing through the origin (0,0) and (σ,0).
- Pure Shear: The circle is centered at the origin (0,0) with radius equal to the shear stress magnitude τ, extending from -τ to +τ on both axes.
- Hydrostatic (Triaxial) Stress: Since σx = σy = σ and τxy = 0, the circle collapses into a single point at (σ, 0) on the normal stress axis.
- Biaxial Stress: The circle is centered at ((σx + σy)/2, 0) with a radius determined by the difference between the two principal stresses.
