JNTU B.Tech II FLIGHT MECHANICS-I Previous Question Paper (April - 2018 - R15)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
PART A
For a bluff body skin friction drag is more than pressure drag. Justify your answer.
Answer
The statement is incorrect. For a bluff body, the flow separates from the surface, creating a large low-pressure wake region behind the body. This results in pressure drag being significantly higher than skin friction drag, as the pressure differential between the front and rear faces dominates the total drag force.
What is a parabolic drag polar? Explain in brief.
Answer
A parabolic drag polar is a mathematical model used to describe the relationship between the lift coefficient (CL) and the drag coefficient (CD) of an aircraft. It is expressed as:
where CD,0 represents the zero-lift drag coefficient and K is the induced drag factor. This model assumes that the drag increases quadratically with the lift coefficient, which is accurate for subsonic flight regimes.

An Airplane is flying straight and level flight at a speed is n time the minimum power speed. Show that the power ratio, P/Pmin = (3+n4)/4n. Where P is the power required corresponding to flight speed, and Pmin is the minimum power required at the altitude.

An aircraft is in steady level flight at sea level at speed of 100 m/s. The pilot causes his aircraft to enter a horizontal, correctly banked circle of 100 m radius keeping the same angle of incidence. The engine thrust is altered as necessary. Then the pilot brings the aircraft out of the turn without altering the angle of incidence and thrust and allows it to climb. Estimate the rate of climb, if at that incidence, the L/D ratio is 8.
