Answer PaperPaper Code: 135AUMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

Part A

125 marks
a

Explain the meaning of stagnation state with an example.

2 marks

Answer

A stagnation state (or total state) is the thermodynamic state of a fluid when it is brought to rest isentropically. For example, the air inside a pitot tube placed in a high-speed flow is brought to rest, and the pressure measured is the stagnation pressure.

b

Define a thermally perfect gas. Explain adiabatic process, reversible process and isentropic process.

3 marks

Answer

A thermally perfect gas follows the equation of state

P = ρRT
, where the internal energy and enthalpy are functions of temperature only. An adiabatic process is one where there is no heat transfer to or from the system. A reversible process is an idealized process that can be reversed without leaving any trace on the surroundings. An isentropic process is both adiabatic and reversible, meaning entropy remains constant.
