Answer PaperPaper Code: 111ADMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

1a

What is unit cell?

2 marks

Answer

A unit cell is the smallest repeating structural unit of a crystal lattice that, when translated repeatedly in three dimensions, generates the entire crystal structure. It is defined by three lattice vectors (a, b, c) and the angles between them (α, β, γ), which together determine the geometry and symmetry of the crystal system.

1b

What are the Miller indices? How they are obtained?

3 marks

Answer

Miller indices are a set of three integers (h, k, l) used to uniquely identify specific crystallographic planes within a crystal lattice. They represent the reciprocals of the fractional intercepts that a plane makes with the crystallographic axes.

The procedure to obtain Miller indices is as follows:

  1. Identify the intercepts of the plane along the x, y, and z axes in terms of the unit cell dimensions (a, b, c). If the plane is parallel to an axis, the intercept is considered infinity.
  2. Take the reciprocals of these intercepts.
  3. Reduce these reciprocals to the smallest set of whole numbers (integers) by multiplying by a common factor if necessary.
  4. Enclose the resulting integers in parentheses as (h k l).
