Explain the different types of bonding in solids with suitable examples.

9 marks

Answer

Bonding in solids arises from the electrostatic forces between atoms or ions, determining the physical and chemical properties of the material. The primary types are:

  1. Ionic Bonding: Formed by the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions resulting from electron transfer. These are typically hard, brittle, and have high melting points. Example: NaCl.
  2. Covalent Bonding: Formed by the sharing of valence electrons between atoms to achieve a stable electronic configuration. These materials are often very hard with high melting points. Example: Diamond (C).
  3. Metallic Bonding: Characterized by a lattice of positive ion cores immersed in a 'sea' of delocalized valence electrons. This allows for high electrical and thermal conductivity. Example: Copper (Cu).
  4. Van der Waals Bonding: Weak secondary forces arising from fluctuating dipoles or permanent dipoles between molecules. These solids are soft and have low melting points. Example: Solid Argon or ice.
  5. Hydrogen Bonding: A specific, stronger type of dipole-dipole interaction occurring when hydrogen is covalently bonded to highly electronegative atoms like N, O, or F. Example: Ice (H2O).

Describe in detail the structure of NaCl.

6 marks

Answer

The structure of sodium chloride (NaCl) is a classic example of an ionic crystal lattice. It crystallizes in a face-centered cubic (FCC) arrangement.

Key structural features include:

  • The structure consists of two interpenetrating FCC sub-lattices: one formed by Na+ ions and the other by Cl- ions.
  • Each Na+ ion is octahedrally coordinated by six Cl- ions, and conversely, each Cl- ion is surrounded by six Na+ ions.
  • The coordination number for both Na+ and Cl- is 6:6.
  • The unit cell contains 4 formula units of NaCl, calculated as: Na+ ions at (8 corners × 1/8) + (6 face centers × 1/2) = 4; Cl- ions at (12 edges × 1/4) + (1 body center × 1) = 4.
  • This arrangement results in a highly stable, high-melting-point ionic solid due to strong electrostatic (Coulombic) forces.
