Part A
What is the function of adulterant in paint.
Answer
Adulterants are added to paint to reduce the overall cost of the product, increase the bulk or volume, and sometimes to improve the durability or resistance of the paint film by filling voids.
Describe the principal rock forming minerals.
Answer
The principal rock-forming minerals include: 1) Quartz, which is hard and resistant to weathering; 2) Feldspar, the most abundant group, which decomposes into clay; 3) Mica, which provides flexibility and cleavage; 4) Amphibole and Pyroxene, which are dark-colored ferromagnesian minerals; and 5) Calcite, which is the primary constituent of limestone.

A steel rod of 20mm diameter passes centrally through a copper tube of 50mm external diameter and 40mm internal diameter. The tube is closed at each end by rigid plates of negligible thickness. The nuts are tightened lightly home on the projecting parts of the rod. If the temperature of the assembly is raised by 500C, calculate the stresses developed in copper and steel. Take Es=200GPa and Ec=100GPa and αs=12×10-6/0C, αc=18×10-6/0C.
