Answer PaperPaper Code: 114CGMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

PART - A

125 marks
a

Explain the terms Mass curve and Double mass curve.

2 marks

Answer

A Mass curve is a cumulative plot of total rainfall or runoff against time, used to determine the storage capacity of a reservoir. A Double mass curve is a graphical technique used to check the consistency of rainfall data at a station by plotting the cumulative annual rainfall of the station against the cumulative average of neighboring stations.

b

What is hydrological cycle and its components?

3 marks

Answer

The Hydrological cycle is the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. Its primary components include evaporation, transpiration, precipitation, infiltration, and runoff.

c

Mention any two methods of separating base flow from total runoff.

A catchment has an area of 500ha. The average slope of the land surface is 0.5% and the maximum travel depth of rain fall in the catchment is approximately 2km. The maximum depth of rainfall in the area with a return period of 25 years is as tabulated below:

Time duration (min)510152025304060
Rain fall depth (mm)1525324550536065

Consider that 200ha of the catchment area has cultivated sandy loam soil(C=0.2) and 300ha has light clay cultivated soil (C=0.7). Determine the peak flow rate of runoff by using the rational method.
