A body is heated to 1100°C and placed in air at 100°C. After one hour its temperature is 600°C. How much additional time is required for it to cool to 300°C?
Answer
Using Newton's Law of Cooling, T(t) = Ts + (T0 - Ts)e-kt. Given T0 = 1100, Ts = 100, and T(1) = 600, we have 600 = 100 + 1000e-k, so e-k = 0.5. For T(t) = 300, 300 = 100 + 1000e-kt, so e-kt = 0.2 = (0.5)log0.5(0.2). Since e-k = 0.5, then t = log0.5(0.2) ≈ 2.32 hours. The additional time required is 2.32 - 1 = 1.32 hours.
Find the integrating factor for the following equation:
Answer
The equation is Mdx + Ndy = 0 with M = 3xy - 2ay2 and N = x2 - 2axy. Here, ∂M/∂y = 3x - 4ay and ∂N/∂x = 2x - 2ay. Since (∂M/∂y - ∂N/∂x)/N = (x - 2ay)/(x2 - 2axy) = 1/x, the integrating factor is e∫(1/x)dx = eln(x) = x.
