i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Define the rank of a matrix.

2 marks

Answer

The rank of a matrix is defined as the maximum number of linearly independent rows or columns in the matrix. Alternatively, it is the order of the largest square sub-matrix with a non-zero determinant.

1b

Consider the system of linear equations:

[[1, a, 1], [1, 2, 2], [1, 5, 3]] [x, y, z]^T = [3, b, 9]^T
For what values of a and b, the system has: (i) unique solution, (ii) infinite solutions, and (iii) no solution.

Answer

To determine the nature of the solutions, we analyze the augmented matrix [A|B]:

[1, a, 1, |, 3]
[1, 2, 2, |, b]
[1, 5, 3, |, 9]

Performing row operations R2 → R2 - R1 and R3 → R3 - R1:

[1, a, 1, |, 3]
[0, 2-a, 1, |, b-3]
[0, 5-a, 2, |, 6]

Performing R3 → R3 - 2R2:

[0, 5-a-2(2-a), 0, |, 6-2(b-3)]
[0, 1+a, 0, |, 12-2b]

The system is consistent if the rank of the coefficient matrix equals the rank of the augmented matrix.

  • Unique solution: Occurs when the determinant of A is non-zero, i.e., 1+a ≠ 0. Thus, the system has a unique solution for a ≠ -1, regardless of the value of b.
  • Infinite solutions: Occurs when the rank of the augmented matrix is less than the number of variables (3) and equal to the rank of A. This requires 1+a = 0 and 12-2b = 0. Thus, a = -1 and b = 6.
  • No solution: Occurs when the rank of the augmented matrix is greater than the rank of A. This happens when 1+a = 0 but 12-2b ≠ 0. Thus, a = -1 and b ≠ 6.
1c

The general form of a differential equation is given by:

d^n y/dx^n + a_1 d^(n-1) y/dx^(n-1) + ... + a_n y = V
Where a_1, a_2, ..., a_n are constants and V is a function of x only. Then, write down the expression for the general solution of this differential equation when all the roots of the auxiliary equation are real and different.
