JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B. Tech III VEHICLE DYNAMICS Previous Question Paper (November/December - 2017 - R13)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions. Illustrate your answers with NEAT sketches wherever necessary.
Part A
List the different forces acting on automobile tyres.
Answer
The primary forces acting on automobile tyres include the vertical load (normal force), longitudinal force (traction or braking force), lateral force (cornering force), and aligning torque.
Explain the following terms: Tyre Stiffness, Effective radius, Rolling resistance.
Answer
Tyre Stiffness is the ratio of the force applied to the tyre to its corresponding deformation (vertical, lateral, or longitudinal). Effective radius is the radius of a tyre calculated by dividing the linear velocity of the wheel center by the angular velocity of the wheel. Rolling resistance is the force that opposes the motion of a tyre when it rolls on a surface, primarily caused by energy dissipation due to hysteresis in the tyre material.
