a

What do you understand by hydrostatic law?

2 marks

Answer

The hydrostatic law states that the rate of increase of pressure in a vertically downward direction is equal to the specific weight of the fluid at that point. Mathematically, it is expressed as:

dp / dz = -ρg

where p is pressure, z is the vertical distance, ρ is the density, and g is the acceleration due to gravity.

b

Determine the specific gravity of a fluid having a viscosity of 0.05 poise and a kinematic viscosity of 0.035 stokes.

3 marks

Answer

Given: Dynamic viscosity (μ) = 0.05 poise = 0.005 Ns/m², Kinematic viscosity (ν) = 0.035 stokes = 0.0000035 m²/s.

Using the relation ν = μ / ρ, we find density (ρ) = μ / ν = 0.005 / 0.0000035 ≈ 1428.57 kg/m³.

Specific gravity (S) = ρ_fluid / ρ_water = 1428.57 / 1000 = 1.428.
