Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define compressibility and bulk modulus.

2 marks

Answer

Compressibility is the reciprocal of bulk modulus, representing the measure of a fluid's change in volume due to pressure changes. Bulk modulus (K) is defined as the ratio of compressive stress to volumetric strain, given by K = -dp / (dV/V).

b

Distinguish between gauge pressure and vacuum pressure.

3 marks

Answer

Gauge pressure is the pressure measured above atmospheric pressure, while vacuum pressure is the pressure measured below atmospheric pressure. Gauge pressure is always positive, whereas vacuum pressure is expressed as a negative gauge value.

c

Two reservoirs 1 and 2 having 15.5 m difference of water levels are connected by a pipeline ABC. The elevation of point B being 4 m below the level of water in reservoir 1. The length AB of the pipeline is 250 m and is made of steel and length BC of pipeline is 450 m and is made of cast iron. The diameter of both pipes is 200 mm. A partially closed valve is located in pipe BC at a distance of 150 m from reservoir 2.
