Answer PaperPaper Code: 113BKMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.

Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions.

In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

What is Dynamic viscosity and what are the units of it?

2 marks

Answer

Dynamic viscosity is a measure of a fluid's internal resistance to flow or deformation when subjected to shear stress. It is defined as the ratio of shear stress to the rate of shear strain, expressed by the relationship:

τ = μ (du/dy)
where μ is the dynamic viscosity. The SI unit is Pascal-second (Pa·s) or N·s/m², and in the CGS system, it is measured in Poise (P), where 1 Pa·s = 10 Poise.

1b

Distinguish between total pressure and center of pressure.

3 marks

Answer

Total pressure is the total force exerted by a static fluid on a submerged surface, whether the surface is plane or curved. It is the resultant of all the individual pressure forces acting on the surface and is calculated by multiplying the pressure at the centroid of the area by the total area of the surface.

Center of pressure is the specific point on the submerged surface through which the resultant total pressure force acts. For a plane surface, it is always located below the centroid of the area because the pressure intensity increases with depth.
